Crochet Open Shell Stitch WRITTEN PATTERN

USA STITCH TERMS

Hook Size(s): according to your yarn

For my sample scarf pictured in this pattern, I used Cygnet Boho Spirit in colourway "Dream" with a 4mm hook.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch = Chain

  • DC = Double crochet

  • Rep = Repeat

  • St = Stitch

  • Inc = Increase

  • V-st = v-stitch

Special Stitch: V-st = 1 DC, ch 3, 1 DC

Pattern for Open Shell Stitch:

Foundation Row: Ch multiples of 7 for your desired width plus 5.

Row 1: Starting in the fifth ch from the hook, make 1 DC and rep *ch 4, skip 6 ch, 1 v-st* across. In the last ch of the row, make (1 DC, ch 1, 1 DC).

Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as 1 DC) and turn. Make 3 DC in the ch 1 sp and rep *1 SC in the ch 4 sp, 7 DC in the ch 3 sp of the v-st* across. To finish the row, make 4 DC in the last ch 1 sp. Note: the 7 DC count as 1 shell.

Row 3: Ch 4 (this counts as 1 DC and ch 1) and turn. Make 1 DC in the same st and rep *ch 4, 1 v-st in the fourth DC of each shell* across. To finish the row, make (1 DC, ch 1, 1 DC) in the last st.

Rows 4-onward: Rep rows 2 and 3 for as long as you want your project to be. Once you’ve reached the desired length, fasten off and cut the yarn.

Happy Crocheting!
