Crochet a Simple Lightweight Summer Shawl

Learn how to crochet this very simple yet effective lightweight summer cover-up / shawl. Worked using just double crochet, single crochet and chains (USA Terms) with an easy one row repeat you can keep growing it from the bottom up until it is the size you want! Ideal for beginners.

This looks particularly beautiful in hand dyed lightweight yarns however, you can use any yarn and any hook size you wish 😃

USA Stitch Terms

Hook Size(s): according to yarn

Abbreviations:

·       Ch = Chain

·       SC = Single crochet

·       DC = Double crochet

·       Rep = Repeat

·       St = Stitch



Foundation Row: Ch 5 and sl st to join.



Row 1: Ch 3 (this counts as the first st) and make 2 DC, ch 2, 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC in the center.



Row 2: Ch 1 and turn.

Make 3 sl st and ch 3 (this counts as the first st).

In the ch sp, make 2 DC, ch 2, 3 DC, ch 5.

In the next ch sp, make 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC.



Row 3: Ch 1 and turn.

Make 3 sl st and ch 3 (this counts as the first st).

In the ch sp, make 2 DC, ch 2, 3 DC, ch 5.

In the next ch sp, make 1 SC, ch 5. In the last ch sp, make 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC.



Row 4: Ch 1 and turn.

Make 3 sl st and ch 3 (this counts as the first st).

In the first ch sp, make 2 DC, ch 2, 3 DC, ch 5.

In each following ch sp, make 1 SC, ch 5.

In the last ch sp, make 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC.



Rows 5-onward: Rep row 4 for as long as you’d like your shawl to be.
