Crochet C2C Granny Square JAYG WRITTEN PATTERN

USA STITCH TERMS

Hook Size(s): according to your yarn

Abbreviations:

  • Ch = Chain

  • DC = Double crochet

  • EDC = Extended double crochet

  • Rep = Repeat

  • St = Stitch

  • Inc = Increase

Pattern for C2C Granny Square:

Foundation Row: Ch 4 and sl st to join.

Row 1: Ch 4 and in the circle, make 3 DC (called a granny cluster) and 1 EDC.

Row 2: Ch 4 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st. Skip the granny cluster of the previous row and make 1 granny cluster and 1 EDC in the last space.

Row 3: Ch 4 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster and 1 EDC in the last space to finish the row.

Row 4: Ch 4 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster and 1 EDC in the last space to finish the row.

Rows 5-onward: Rep row 4 for as wide as you want your granny square to be. Each row will grow with 1 additional granny cluster. The square in the video is 6 rows wide.

Decrease Row 1: Ch 3 and turn. Skip the first space and make 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row and 1 EDC in the last space to finish the row.

Rep this row until only 1 granny cluster remains.

Last Row: Ch 1 and turn. Make 1 DC in the last space. Fasten off and cut the yarn.

Put a stitch marker in the ch 4 of the foundation row so that you know what the bottom right-hand corner is. Weave in your ends. Count how many clusters wide and tall your squares are before beginning to JAYG. The squares used for this pattern tutorial are 5 clusters wide and 5 clusters tall.

Instructions for JAYG Method:

Attach your yarn to the corner space of the side where you want to make your next square. It is important to remember that you will be attaching the second square with the first as you build your second square up.

Foundation Row (this will be worked into the side of the first square): Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the same space. Ch 4 and turn your work. Make 1 sl st into the SC to form a loop.

Row 1: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the first square. Ch 2 and turn. In the circle, make 3 DC (called a granny cluster) and 1 EDC.

Row 2: Ch 4 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster in the last space. To attach to the side of the first square, start 1 EDC WITHOUT pulling through all 3 loops at the end as you usually do. When you have those 3 st, insert your hook into the next space of the first square, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 3 loops, YO, pull through the remaining 2 loops. This is called the joining st.

Row 3: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the first square. Ch 2 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster and 1 EDC in the last space to finish the row.

Row 4: Ch 4 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster in the last space. To attach to the side of the first square, make the joining st (refer to row 2).

If you have an EVEN number of clusters for your squares, you will end on a joining st row and begin your decrease rows accordingly. In which case, you will do the following:

Decrease Row: Ch 3 and turn.

If you have an ODD number of clusters for your squares (as I do with 5 clusters), you will NOT finish on a joining row and instead do the following:

Row 5: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the first square. Ch 2 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster and 1 EDC in the last space to finish the row.

Decrease Row: Ch 3 and turn.

NOTE: For as many rows as you have, depending on how big your square is, you will repeat rows 2 and 3 of these JAYG method instructions.

Using these instructions, join as many squares together as you need depending on the desired project width. When you begin your second row of squares, building on top of the previous row, you will make a slight alteration.

In the LAST INCREASE row of the square, you will NOT SC into the last space of the previous square but in the JOIN between two conjoined squares of the previous row.

To work up a square by joining to TWO squares, do the following:

Foundation Row: Attach the yarn in the corner where the three squares are joined. Make 1 SC in the same space. Ch 4 and turn your work. Make 1 sl st into the SC to form a loop.

Row 1: Ch 1, skip 1 space, and make 1 SC in the next space of the side square. Ch 2 and turn. In the circle, make 3 DC (called a granny cluster). To attach to the side, make the joining st by skipping the first space and working into the second space of the other square.

Row 2: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the side square. Ch 2 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster in the last space. To attach to the side of the square, make the joining st.

Row 3: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the side square. Ch 2 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster in the last space. To attach to the side of the square, make the joining st.

Row 4: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the side square. Ch 2 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster in the last space. To attach to the side of the square, make the joining st.

Row 5: Ch 1 and make 1 SC in the next space of the side square. Ch 2 and turn. Make 1 granny cluster in between the first and second st, 1 granny cluster in between the granny clusters of the previous row, and 1 granny cluster in the last space. To attach to the side of the square, make the joining st. In the LAST INCREASE row of the square, you will NOT work the joining st in last space of the square but the JOIN between two conjoined squares of the previous row.

Decrease Row: Ch 3 and turn.
